Methadone (Prescribed or Street)

Methadone Maintenance Treatment  (MMT)

This page and the associated forum has been established for the purpose providing a safe and informative place that ideas and information can be shared about Methadone Recovery.  The Methadone Recovery Forum is facilitated by Richard Sowden of the Methadone Recovery Network and Dennis Hansen of New Beginnings Detox of Florida.

Both Richard and Dennis have had opiate dependencies in the past and together have spent many years on methadone maintenance.  Having successfully, walked away from these dependencies, they offer assistance and advice to those struggling with methadone dependency.

Richard has spent much of his sober life counseling and advising folks that are dependant on methadone.  He give hope to those that previously had no hope of escaping the madness.  Dennis, through his clinics in South Florida, provides some cutting edge medical techniques that make this escape easier than ever before.  Get some expert advice from those that have been there.

NOTE:  The Methadone Recovery Network recognizes that the use of methadone is a legitimate FDA drug that provides a powerful pain relieving option for those suffering legitimate chronic pain.  They further recognize that methadone and MMT is a viable alternative as a "Replacement Therapy" for those that have been suffering with opiate addiction that have significant consequences while in pursuit of their drug of choice.  Furthermore, in all cases, adopting a solid program of recovery that includes attending 12 Step meetings and a spiritual awakening is the only defense against this formidable foe OPIATE ADDICTION and METHADONE ADDICTION.

Although many have gotten free from this bondage with out the above - the vast majority are successful because of make a program of recovery as their "Replacement Therapy". Let us tell you how we did it.

GETTING OFF METHADONE

Please limit inquiries to issues regarding getting off of methadone.

Richard Sowden was born near Philadelphia Pa. His home life was fairly normal but he got in some minor trouble and dropped out of high school. As soon as possible, he got his GED and went on to get an A.D. at Community College. On a trip to Europe he got addicted to heroin in 1973. This set him on a course from which it took him on a 30 year odyssey into the world of addiction. During this time, he had several periods of sobriety, and one in the mid 1990’s that lasted over 2 years.

During the 30 year period, he was in many different drug programs and detoxed including 10 methadone programs in 5 different states. In January of 2003, a series of events started him on a different path and he has been drug free ever since. He became involved in 12 step meetings and the Christian church and remains active in both to this day. In 2007 he became active in online support for addicts, especially those struggling with methadone addiction, and sometimes going to speak at clinics.

Through the miracle of the internet he discovered his old friend Dennis Hansen who he used to play music with and use with. The two old friends share a vision. Of recovery and hope for the most desperate and hard core addicts.  It is their mutual desire that more addicts will take the first steps from a hopeless life, to a better one. Richard presently lives near Doylestown Pa. and teaches music.

Dennis Hansen was also born near Philadelphia Pa. Having been raised in a large Irish Catholic family, there were no real indicators or stressors that would lead one to think that there was a potential future drug problem looming in the future.  In his late teens after experimenting with various drugs, he chose opiates as his DOC (drug of choice).  For years he used every conceivable opiate he could get his hands on.  All the while pursuing the secondary love of his life - music.  This is where Rick and Dennis crossed paths.  They soon found that they also shared a common love - opiates.  The pact was sealed.  Together and with other partners in crime they spent years hustling pills, scamming doctors, scamming pharmacists and looking under every rock for what they wanted.  Ultimately, Dennis used heroin and became a full blown heroin junkie for years.

Richard and Dennis ultimately chose the "safe haven" of MMT (Methadone Maintenance Treatment).  Having spent years in the system on methadone, they both got see the destructive nature of this drug and a system the is designed to keep it's patients bound.  Having broken free, they each in their own ways, have a calling to help others.

Today Dennis walks free from this burden.  He is active at his Christian church's' Recovery Ministry and is a partner/owner of New Beginnings Detox Centers, a chain of detox clinics that specializes on getting patients off methadone in Florida.  And he also plays music still...  but now it only at the church he attends in the Recovery Band.  He is eternally grateful to a merciful and restoring God!
