Methadone Recovery Forum

This forum has been established for the purpose providing a safe and informative place that ideas and information can be shared about Methadone Recovery.  The Methadone Recovery Forum is facilitated by Richard Sowden of the Methadone Recovery Network and Dennis Hansen of New Beginnings Detox of Florida.

Both Richard and Dennis have had opiate dependencies in the past and together have spent many years on methadone maintenance.  Having sucessfully, walked away from these dependancies, they offer assitance and advice to those struggling with this "LIQUID HANDCUFFS" or whatever form your methadone is in.  The damage is the same.....

New Beginnings Detox, located in South Florida treat methadone addicted patients.   Patients fly in to West Palm Beach from around the entire country to seek help via the New Beginnings Detox Advanced Methadone Detox Protocol®.  This protocol allows patients for the first time, a way to comfortably convert to bupreorphine and off all opiates in a way that is more comfortable way than ever before.

1. Hi again,
So I ended up cutting down from 40 to about 15mg a day and then I stopped completely a week ago. This is day 7 and I still have not slept. When can I expect to be able to fall asleep?
I really need to sleep as soon as poss.

2. We will have a real forum soon . You can post or reply and it will be easier to login like a regular forum. This forum will be for people on MMT, for those who are tapering and for those who are former (longtime) methadone users like myself. I hope you will come by soon.

3. Marc, good to see you here. I went down 5 mg. per day a few times and the last time 7 years ago. It worked out ok and it was manageable. I guess you are younger than I was then(49), so you have handle it better. Stay posting here and some others may join to help you through this. all the best

4. Hey all
My name's marc, I was taking H for about 5 months and over a week ago I stopped and I have taken 40mg of methadone since. I have stopped H before and it is so awful I wanted to take methadone in the hopes i would be able to stop that quickly and soon. So I plan to cut down from 40mg to 35 ...down in 5's and stop by end of the week. I have only been on it a very very short time so I hope it's gonna be ok. I have so much on I am moving and I hope I am going to be able to manage.
I really appreciate that ppl can talk to eachother about it on the internet. Really makes a diff. Thanks Rick.

5. Kevin, it sounds like you are doing MMT pretty well now. If you continue to stay off all get high drugs and just take methadone as perscribed, you can get off. These clinic doctors should be resisting your wanting to lower your dose and taper. I never had much problem coming down on whatever dose I was on until I was very low of on 0 mg. You could go on sub for a few months to "trasnsition" from methadone to drug free. First keep doing what you are doing and start coming down. No hurry just keep making progress. all the best, Rick

6. Whenever I've told methadone doctora I want to taper down. I always get a little resistance even though I have never shown dirty on a sample. Even now when I know what my body can take as it adjusts to a lower dose, I get told go slower. I have read many stats that state coming off methadone the odds are stacked against me. Those stats do not faze me at all. I have a strong desire and know how to succeed with this.
I am ready to get this ball and chain off my feet, it's that simple.

7. Just to add to my previous post. In all my years on methadone I never used any opiates, it really saved me. I first starting taking methadone after two failed attempts at long term treatment. I used each time almost immediately after finishing the 5/6 month programs. The first program I was on, there was zero tolerance for any drug or alcohol. The last program and the one I'm on now follows the harm reduction model. Recently I have stopped using all drugs other than the methadone. I have a sincere desire to come off the methadone. I have the confidence I can do it from my other experience. I felt I learned from my last relapse. It only took my taking a few percodans at work and then some oxicontin before I was back injecting heroin within one month. I got back on the methadone asap. which was about a month on a waiting list. I am feeling confident but I would like to find some sort of support non 12 step type. Thanks for reading this

8. I am presently at 18 milligrams of methadone. I have been on methadone for 11 1/2 years out of the last 13.I had tapered off once before very slowly from 80 to 0 over one year. I am thinking about switching to suboxene. Anyone out there have any experience with it? I am now at the point where i am going down one mil every 2 weeks. I am in no rush really. I would like to be off it sometime this summer or fall. I didn't really suffer much when I tapered before. I have heard clonadine is helpful. When i withdrew from heroin i was given clonadine in rehab. I would like to speak to others who may be tapering off themselves. I have no support at the moment. I am a atheist and am not into the 12 step programs at all.

10. I hope that while we are working some bugs out on the new blog site, some folks will post. This can be easily done by going to the bottom of this page and filling in your name and e mail and "newbeginningsdetox' in the website space. Don't worry , you won't get solicited or get spam. I hope to see some of you here as we trudge the road of recovery.

One though I had this week was that the first 2 thoughts I had each morning were, I need a smoke and how am I going to get to the methadone clinic today? The last years of my use, I didn't have a car and never got takehome doses except Sunday because I never had a clean urine. Methadone helped me a lot the first few years I was on it to function, but it stopped working and I used other drugs. Now I don't worry about my dose when I wake up, but I did for so long , it's hard to belive it's over. I'm not cured, but it is getting easier, slowly but surley. all the best
